Savannah is home to Hunter Army Airfield and Fort Stewart, headquarters of the U.S. Army's 3rd Infantry Division. Combined, the two bases are home to more than 21,000 military tenants and generate an annual direct federal expenditure of $1.2 billion. As the Army’s premier heavy force power projection platform on the East Coast, Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield have consistently proven rapid deployment capabilities in operations ranging from the 1990 Gulf War through subsequent annual deployments to Egypt, Kuwait, Bosnia, and Kosovo; and, most recently, to operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
